Great things are made great by the people who value them. Antiques are only as valuable as their collectors deem them as such. There are a lot of instances when a collector’s item looks old, ugly and so-nothing-of-value-at-all. But just looking at the face of the collector lightening up with pride and oozing with confidence as he presents his collections, warms your heart as well. Then the item doesn’t look so bad after all. There are hundreds of reasons why people collect weird items. There are at least three major reasons why. The very first reason is very obvious and so indispensable that without which, collecting is pointless. It is the satisfaction the collector gets from the things he keeps. We all get satisfied from doing or not doing, keeping or throwing items that are either close to us or those we hate. This is also in relation to the second reason of being so attached to those items. Our attachment to them brings us to want to get more of it, even paying too much and sometimes way beyond our means. The first and the second reasons are interrelated. When we are so attached to something, upon getting what we want, we are so satisfied that we want nothing more at the moment. This is a very good outlet for those who are in distress, in pain or in any extreme emotions that need coping up with. Aside from friends and family, anyone can get comfort from collecting antiques. This is way better than self-destructing means of coping up. In time, some people upon getting better or getting over with those emotions are able to give up this hobby of collecting. Still, others don’t; even after moving on. But of course, it doesn’t follow that when one collects, he is emotionally disturbed. Others collect for the sake of collecting. Others still, because they don’t have other ways of spending their money. The last major reason is that other collectors want to experience the past through the antique they’re collecting. There is that nostalgic feeling of using or keeping the item as if he has really been there at that time. The mere possession of the classic item transports them to that point in time when it was first made and widely used. These people could have existing problems of the feeling of wanting to belong. It could be that they feel rejected. In turn, they seek comfort on the thought that should they have existed in the past, they would belong. But then again, reasons are but mere illusions. They exist only on the minds of their possessors. Whatever they may be, for as long as the collector gets something positive out of it, then it’s all good.

Classics never grow old. This adage is a bit ironic since the word classic in

itself signifies a past fad. When we hear the word antique, what pops into our minds is this word classic. Antique, on the other hand, is defined in the Webster’s Dictionary as a relic of the distant past or a piece of furniture, pottery, etc. dating from an earlier historical period and sought after by collectors. The latter are those people who collect antiques for different reasons and with different criteria in choosing so. For all the criteria a collector uses, five are of the most common. The most indispensable is that the item must be old. Otherwise, it will not be considered an antique after all. Who wants to collect something so common anyway? The purpose of collecting and keeping them is defeated when all the others can easily acquire and dispose the item as they like. Second is the beauty of the item. Now this criteria is subjective since beauty as we know, is in the eye of the beholder. What may be beautiful to one may not be so to the other. So long as the item passes the standard for beauty of the collector then it’s worth the price to pay. The item’s rarity is the third criteria. It should be as rare as the shooting star, or as a blue moon. Any collector will not be proud of his collection if his neighbor has the same items bought at a store when he actually bought it at a distant place believing it to be rare. The great designs and styles used on the item is the fourth criteria. Sometimes what makes the item a collectible is also the talent that is manifested on it by someone popular in the past. One good example is the Monalisa of Leonardo da Vinci. The item may be replicated a million times but the original will remain original. The thought that one of the greatest artists to ever walk on Earth painted it, that he laid his own paintbrush and hands on it, is already of great value, whether or not the painting itself is of beauty. The last is that the item is a product or owned by someone famous. The owner doesn’t have to be someone from the past. He could be living still at the moment the collector collects his items. This is usually the case when someone famous puts on auction sale his items, memorabilias, etc. Famous basketball players, world renowned boxers and other sports related icons are usually the ones selling their items. There are other criteria a collector may have but in all of these, what matters the most is his closeness or attachment to those items. After all, his satisfaction is his utmost reason for collecting such antiques.

Collect and Collect and Select Best Antique

What is the definition of antique? How can we say that such a thing qualifies as antique? Generally, antique means an old collectable memorabilia. Does it mean a mobile phone that has been outdated and has been faced out for more than a year can be considered antique? Logically, it is old and it can be a collectable item. Thus, it is considered antique in a very simple sense.

Antique has been understood in many ways. For others, an old mobile phone can be considered an antique but others would not. In determining what makes a thing antique is generally depends on the view of the collector but the indispensible requirement for a thing to be antique is that it must be old. It does not matter how old it is but it should be old enough that ample time has passed and still the item is still intact and maybe useful for the collectors.

Some collectors would base their judgment on the beauty of the item. If the item has a rare beauty despite its age then they considered it to be a collectable item worthy of their attention. Others would also look at the rarity of the item. If they believed what they found to be rare and has the most unique feature, then it is a collectable item.

Some collectors would also rely on the craftsmanship applied especially those antiques recovered with great designs. Condition of the item is also one of the factors a collector criticize an antique item if it is still in perfect condition and can be used for decorations.

The most common feature why an antique is of great value is the fact that it was once used by royal people from different era. This is evident in places where old palaces were once still built and the possibility of finding royal artifacts are higher compare to any other place. Antique collectors gather in these types of places like a moth gathers in a light.

One of the popular reason also why they considered antique as such is because the item was the product of famous people from the past. This is true especially in paintings. Collectors do not mind how much they will pay for a particular item of a former famous artist or what the condition of the item is. All they want is to collect a piece of work of the famous people from the past.

Antique collection is an old hobby. We have heard so many stories about collecting antique memorabilia. The fact remains that even after so many years knowing that there are plenty of people collecting antique items still there are still new personalities who wanted to start their own collections. Others would go to extreme length in paying so much for a particular item for the purpose of adding it to their long list of collection. This is very true especially in paintings. I bet, this is one kind of hobby that will never grow old even if their collections are a hundred times older than the collector. In addition collecting antiques has not only become a hobby but became a lifestyle. Others even feel depressed if they will not be able to acquire an item that would add to their collection. Almost all collectors feel a certain attachment to the thing they collected and spend more time with their collections compare to other people. It is indeed strange but others actually act just like that. The question is why would they act like in a certain manner? Why would they feel something to the ‘thing’ even if those items do not return their affection? To come up with explanation, below are the common answers to abovementioned questions.

First, others love the feeling of collecting antique items because they want to experience the past. Antique signifies the life of the past and their creativity. It is exciting to know that you have been living with a piece of that past and knowing what could have been their lives using the same item that you have right now.

Second reason is just the satisfaction of collecting it. Other people who are now currently on the verge of splurging on collectable items had never intend to collect it in the first place. Sometimes it all started with the appreciation of an antique item without the sole purpose of actually collecting it. Eventually, without realizing it the numbers of antiques grew and further became a collection.

The third reason is the acquisition of those items created by famous people. These kinds of stuff range from paintings, furniture, and even kitchen utensils. The form and state of the thing does not matter. What is significant for the collectors is the fact that such item belong to someone famous in the past. The price is even ridiculously expensive but what is important to them is the joy their antique memorabilia can give them.
